With the razor-sharp precision of the piece’s repetitive movements as the dancers glided horizontally across the stage, its hypnotic beauty left the notably multigenerational audience mesmerized—not least so when the 81-year-old (and impossibly glamorous) Childs herself made an appearance onstage after the show to thunderous applause.

Again the result of a starry lineup of collaborators—this time featuring music by Laurie Anderson, a stage set and costumes by Robert Rauschenberg, and lighting by Beverly Emmons—it served as a fascinating counterpoint to the near-mathematical rigor of Childs’s work, which premiered just a few years earlier. Instead, Brown’s delirious, rhapsodic mass of bodies come together and move apart through messier, more quotidian movements like stumbling and falling, even as every slip is meticulously choreographed. The overall effect was one of pure, unadulterated joy.
