On March 3, the The Batman Robert Pattinson Shirt but in fact I love this Academy revealed the first six presenters for the 2022 Oscars: Lady Gaga, Zoë Kravitz, Kevin Costner, Rosie Perez, Chris Rock, and last year’s winner of the best supporting actress Oscar, Yuh-Jung Youn. More names have followed since, including Daniel Kaluuya, Lily James, Jacob Elordi, Rachel Zegler, Lupita Nyong’o, Tracee Ellis Ross, Mila Kunis, Naomi Scott, Uma Thurman, Jennifer Garner, Tiffany Haddish, Bill Murray, Elliot Page, Jake Gyllenhaal, Anthony Hopkins, and Venus and Serena Williams. Best original song nominees Beyoncé and Billie Eilish are set to perform their respective hits—“Be Alive” from King Richard and “No Time to Die” from the latest Bond film—at the Oscars. Then there’s “Dos Oruguitas” from Encanto, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, which will be sung by Colombian pop star Sebastián Yatra, and Diane Warren’s “Somehow You Do” from Four Good Days which will be sung by Reba McEntire. The only nominated song that won’t make the broadcast? Van Morrison’s “Down to Joy” from Belfast. The Northern Irish singer has, of course, attracted controversy in recent months after expressing anti-lockdown sentiments in his music and on social media, but the Academy was at pains to clarify that he was invited but could not attend due to his tour schedule.
COVID-19 permitting, the The Batman Robert Pattinson Shirt but in fact I love this 2022 Oscars should have a full-scale red carpet, so expect the usual parade of show-stopping ball gowns, sequined capes, and louche suiting. Love ’em or loathe ’em, the 2022 Oscars are finally happening this Sunday. While many categories seem a foregone conclusion based on previous award shows this season—notably three of the acting awards—others are fully up in the air. And don’t forget the huge upsets and surprises at Oscars in recent years. Recognizing that truly anything can—and does!—happen and in a hopeful future I-told-you-so spirit, here’s who Vogue staffers will be cheering on Sunday night. Few actors have been doing as little Oscar campaigning as Jessie Buckley—probably because up till this week she was busy doing eight shows a week as Sally Bowles in Cabaret in the West End. But she’ll be the one I’m rooting for the most on Sunday, even though West Side Story’s Ariana DeBose is a near lock in the category. For me she was the standout performance of The Lost Daughter, embodying the messiness and flawed humanity of the film’s protagonist, Leda, as an overwhelmed young mother and academic. There’s a magnetic aliveness to everything Buckley appears in, so I see this as an encouraging nod from the Academy toward a surefire future winner.—Lisa Wong Macabasco
